How to choose an LED mirror

An illuminated mirror does what a ceiling light cannot: it lights your face evenly instead of casting hard shadows under the eyes and chin. Four things decide the choice – the light colour, the colour rendering, the shape and the extras.

Light colour: warm, neutral or cool?

Warm white (3000 K) is the evening setting. Neutral white (4500 K on Basic LED, 4000 K on Power LED and Philips) and cool white are the right choice for make-up – warm light shifts the tones and should never be used when you are applying it. If you cannot decide, the Dual version switches between the light colours.

Light quality: look at the CRI

The colour rendering index (CRI) tells you how faithfully a light source shows colour. CRI 80 is standard for bathroom lighting, but for make-up you want 90 or more. Our LED lighting runs from CRI 80 to 95 depending on the version – if you do your make-up at the mirror, choose Power LED (COB) or Philips lighting, both CRI 90+.

Backlit or front-lit?

On a backlit bathroom mirror the LED sits behind the glass and washes the wall around it; on a front-lit one the light shines through a sandblasted band on the face of the mirror, straight at you. Backlit is the softer, more atmospheric option; front-lit puts more light on your face.

Shape and size

Pick by the wall and the style: round mirrors with lights soften the straight lines of a bathroom, rectangular and square ones use every centimetre of the wall, and irregular shapes turn the wall itself into the feature. Sizes are chosen from fixed options on the product page.

Illuminated bathroom mirrors

Most illuminated mirrors end up in the bathroom, because that is where light on the face is usually missing. A bathroom mirror with lights replaces both the separate lamp above the mirror and the cable running to it; the full range sits under bathroom mirrors. The light will not replace the ceiling light in the room, but it takes over the job of lighting your face.

Extras worth having

You can add a demister pad (a heated pad behind the glass, so the mirror stays clear when the room steams up), a touch sensor, a motion sensor, a digital clock, a Bluetooth speaker, a glass shelf, or a frame in brushed anodised aluminium in five colours – matt black, matt grey, champagne gold, warm gold and silver. The electronics sit hidden behind the glass, so no cabling shows. A framed mirror does not throw light onto the wall, so if you want the glow around the mirror, choose the frameless version. We do not make dressing table or vanity mirrors – every mirror we make is wall-mounted. The glass is lead-free: Mirox 4Green+ (AGC) and Saint-Gobain. Our LED mirrors are IP44 rated depending on the version. A mains-powered mirror in a bathroom should still be connected by a qualified electrician, who will check that the position suits the bathroom zone it sits in. We don't fit shaver sockets, and we don't make battery-powered mirrors.
