What a large mirror actually does

A big mirror is the cheapest way to change how large a room feels. Hung opposite a window it doubles the daylight; hung along the long wall of a narrow room it widens it. The mistake is buying one that is merely biggish – a mirror that is too small for the wall reads as an accident, while one that is clearly deliberate reads as architecture.

Full-length wall mirrors

In theory a mirror half your own height is enough to see yourself head to toe, but in practice we recommend a mirror 140–170 cm tall: the bottom edge 30–40 cm off the floor, which puts the top edge roughly level with the top of the head of the tallest person in the house. A wall-mounted mirror does the job of a leaner without the floor space, and it cannot be knocked over – which matters with a child or a dog in the house. We do not make freestanding, floor, leaner or cheval mirrors; everything here hangs on the wall.

How big can it be?

Rectangles go up to 200 × 200 cm and circles up to 150 cm across. Above about 150 cm in either direction the weight matters as much as the size: the fixings have to be into something solid, and on plasterboard that means finding the studs or using plugs rated for the load.

Where a large mirror goes

Above the fireplace, a large lounge mirror or an overmantel sized to the chimney breast. A large hallway mirror is the last thing you check before leaving. In a bedroom, beside the window rather than facing the bed. In a home gym, where the mirror is a working tool rather than decoration. And above a wide vanity unit, where a big bathroom mirror is the difference between a room that feels finished and one that does not.

Frameless at size

At large sizes a frame adds visual weight and cost without adding much, which is why most big mirrors we make are frameless, with a polished edge – see mirrors without lights. Above 100 cm a large round mirror or a large arched mirror is often the better answer than a bigger rectangle. A bevelled edge is the exception worth paying for: on a big flat expanse of glass, the bevel gives the eye a border to land on.

Fixing a large mirror

Spread the weight across several fixings. Mirrors with lights come with a mounting kit in the box; for mirrors without lights you order hangers, mirror adhesive or mounting tape as an accessory. In plasterboard, use fixings rated for the weight, and on tiles drill with a tile bit. Safety backing film is available as an option – it holds the glass together if the mirror is ever broken, which is worth having on anything large or anywhere it might be knocked.
