Irregular and wavy mirrors

Wavy, pebble and everything between

Irregular mirrors are having a moment in British interiors, and the words for them are worth untangling. A wavy mirror has an undulating outline – the sides ripple like a ribbon, and the ends are fully rounded. A pebble mirror is a smooth, asymmetric shape, like a stone worn round by a river: no two edges the same, no straight lines anywhere. A cloud mirror sits between the two, with soft lobes rather than regular waves. A squiggle is a wavy shape taken further.

Geometric shapes too

Not every shape here is a flowing one. Hexagons, faceted multi-sided outlines, upright pill shapes with fully rounded ends, and soft-cornered triangles are all cut the same way, and they suit a room where a flowing shape would be too much. If the outline you want is an arch, that has a page of its own: arched mirrors.

Where to hang one

An irregular mirror needs space around it, because the outline is the point. A clear stretch of wall in a living room, above a console table in a hallway, or above a basin where it breaks up the grid of the tiling – see bathroom mirrors. What it does not want is a gallery wall of framed pictures fighting it.

Size and proportion

Because the outline is irregular, "width" means the widest point. Above furniture, keep that widest point to 70–90% of the width of the piece below. On an open wall, a shape under about 60 cm reads as an accent; 80–120 cm is where it becomes the feature of the room.

Lit versions

Add LED backlighting and the mirror changes character after dark: the light shines through a sandblasted band that follows the edge, so the outline is drawn onto the wall behind it. Those sit under irregular LED mirrors, in fixed sizes.
