What a hallway mirror is for

Two jobs, and they want different mirrors. The first is practical: a last look before you open the front door, which needs height rather than width. The second is spatial – hallways are the darkest, narrowest rooms in most British houses, and a mirror is the most reliable way to fix both at once.

Narrow halls

In a hall under about 120 cm wide, a wide mirror makes the passage feel busier, not bigger. A slim mirror hung vertically – 30 to 50 cm wide and as tall as the wall allows – lifts the ceiling and reflects light down the length of the hall without crowding it. Hang it on the wall facing the front door or a window, never opposite a cluttered wall.

Height by the front door

In theory a mirror half your own height is enough to see yourself head to toe, but in practice we recommend a mirror 140–170 cm tall: the bottom edge 30–40 cm off the floor, which puts the top edge roughly level with the top of the head of the tallest person in the house. See large wall mirrors for the taller formats. We make wall-mounted mirrors only – a hung mirror is safer in a narrow hall than a leaner, which can be knocked by coats, bags and passing shoulders.

Above a console table

The classic hallway arrangement. Keep the mirror to 70–90% of the width of the console and leave 15–20 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the glass. Round and arched shapes both work well here, because they soften a corridor made entirely of straight lines and door frames.

Stairs and the landing

A mirror on the half-landing catches light from the stairwell window and throws it down the stairs – one of the most effective places to hang one in the whole house. Two cautions: hang it where it reflects light rather than the stairs themselves, so nobody coming down the stairs is startled by their own reflection, and fix it into something solid, because a stairwell is the worst place for a mirror to come off the wall.

Sizes

You choose the exact size on mirrors without lights: set the width and height to the centimetre in the configurator, up to 200 × 200 cm, with round mirrors from 13 to 150 cm across. LED mirrors come in fixed sizes. We make the mirror, not the furniture, so there are no mirror-and-console sets – a glass shelf is available as an accessory, but the mirror is designed to hang above the console you already have.

Spread the weight across several fixings. Mirrors with lights come with a mounting kit in the box; for mirrors without lights you order hangers, mirror adhesive or mounting tape as an accessory. In plasterboard, use fixings rated for the weight, and on tiles drill with a tile bit.
