What a bevelled edge does

A bevel is a band around the edge of the glass ground at a shallow angle and then polished. Light entering that angled band is refracted, so the border of the mirror picks up a faint rainbow and reads as a frame that is made of nothing but glass. It is the traditional way to finish a mirror, and the reason a bevelled mirror looks finished even on a bare wall.

Bevelled or polished?

A polished edge is ground flat and buffed clear: plain, modern, and the lower-cost option. A bevelled edge adds a hand-polishing step and gives the mirror a visible border. In a period room the bevel usually wins; in a minimal bathroom the polished edge usually does.

Where a bevel works best

On large flat mirrors, where the border gives the eye something to land on – see large wall mirrors. On rectangular mirrors above a fireplace or a console table. In a bathroom the bevel does the same job as it does anywhere, but note that the band collects water marks slightly more readily than a flat polished edge, so it wants wiping after a shower.

Adding a bevel to a mirror cut to size

The bevel is not limited to this category. In the cut to size configurator you can add a bevelled edge to any rectangle or square you draw, up to 200 × 200 cm. On circles and shaped mirrors the finish is a polished edge – the bevel is a straight-edge job.

Care

Clean with a soft cloth and a little glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, not onto the mirror – liquid running into the edge is what damages the backing over time. Every mirror is cut, polished and packed in our own workshop and dispatched within 4 working days. delivery is free on all orders
