The mirror you get dressed in front of

A bedroom needs one mirror that shows all of you, and everything else is optional. In theory a mirror half your own height is enough to see yourself head to toe, but in practice we recommend a mirror 140–170 cm tall: the bottom edge 30–40 cm off the floor, which puts the top edge roughly level with the top of the head of the tallest person in the house. Hang it where the daylight falls on you rather than behind you – beside a window rather than opposite it, if you have the choice, because a mirror facing the window puts you in your own shadow. (Opposite the window is the right answer when you want the mirror to bounce daylight around the room; it is the wrong one for the mirror you get dressed in front of.)

Wall-mounted, not freestanding

We make wall-mounted mirrors only – no cheval, floor or leaner mirrors. In a bedroom that is usually an advantage: a hung mirror takes no floor space in a room that rarely has any to spare, and it cannot be pulled over.

Above a chest of drawers

The other standard position. Keep the mirror to 70–90% of the width of the chest and leave 15–20 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the glass. A round or arched shape softens a bedroom full of rectangular furniture.

Dressing areas and make-up

If you do your make-up in the bedroom, the ceiling light is working against you: it comes from above and behind, and it shadows exactly the parts of the face you are looking at. An LED mirror lights the face from around the glass instead. Choose CRI 90+ lighting in neutral or cool white – warm light is flattering but shifts the tones you are matching. We make wall-mounted mirrors, so this is a mirror above a dressing table rather than a vanity mirror standing on it.

Children's rooms and nurseries

A mirror in a child's room or a nursery wants two things: safety backing film, which holds the glass together if it is ever broken, and fixings into something solid rather than plasterboard alone. Hang it low enough to be useful – a child's eye level, not an adult's – and keep it away from the top of a bed or a bunk.

Facing the bed

Whether a mirror should face the bed is a question of taste rather than of anything we can measure. If it bothers you, the practical answer is to hang it on the same wall as the headboard, where it does its job without being in view from the pillow.

Sizes

You choose the exact size on mirrors without lights: set the width and height to the centimetre in the configurator, up to 200 × 200 cm, with round mirrors from 13 to 150 cm across. LED mirrors come in fixed sizes.

Spread the weight across several fixings. Mirrors with lights come with a mounting kit in the box; for mirrors without lights you order hangers, mirror adhesive or mounting tape as an accessory. In plasterboard, use fixings rated for the weight, and on tiles drill with a tile bit.
