Choosing a bathroom mirror

The bathroom mirror is the one you use every day, and the one most often bought in the wrong size. Three decisions cover almost everything: how wide, whether it lights, and whether it steams up.

How wide?

The rule that works: the mirror should be 70–90% of the width of the vanity unit below it. On a 60 cm unit, 42–54 cm; on an 80 cm unit, 56–72 cm; on a 120 cm unit, 84–108 cm. Wider than the unit and the mirror looks bolted on; much narrower and the wall looks unfinished. Hang it with the centre at eye level for the people who use it most, which usually puts the bottom edge 15–25 cm above the basin.

With lights or without?

If the bathroom already has good lighting at face height, an unlit mirror is fine and cheaper. If your lighting is a single ceiling fitting – as it is in most British bathrooms – then it is casting shadows straight down onto your face, and an LED mirror is the fix. For make-up, choose a CRI 90+ version in neutral or cool white. All of our bathroom mirrors are wall-mounted and made to measure – we don't make vanity or dressing table mirrors that stand on the worktop.

And the steam?

Every bathroom mirror mists over after a hot shower. A demister pad – a heated pad fitted behind the glass – keeps the surface above the dew point so it stays clear: the middle clears first and the rest follows. It is an optional extra on our LED mirrors, switched on separately, with no timer.

Shapes for a bathroom

Round mirrors break up the grid of the tiling and suit a basin in a corner. Rectangles waste the least wall above a wide unit. Arched mirrors soften the room while keeping a flat bottom edge that follows the vanity. Irregular shapes turn the mirror into the feature.

Cloakrooms and en suites

A downstairs cloakroom or a small bathroom usually has a small basin and a narrow wall, which is where a small round mirror or a slim rectangle earns its place – a toilet mirror does not need to be big to work. Cut to size means you can fit the strip of wall you actually have rather than the one a shop-bought mirror assumes.

Fitting and wiring

Our LED mirrors are IP44 rated depending on the version. A mains-powered mirror in a bathroom should still be connected by a qualified electrician, who will check that the position suits the bathroom zone it sits in. We don't fit shaver sockets, and we don't make battery-powered mirrors. Spread the weight across several fixings. Mirrors with lights come with a mounting kit in the box; for mirrors without lights you order hangers, mirror adhesive or mounting tape as an accessory. In plasterboard, use fixings rated for the weight, and on tiles drill with a tile bit.

Sizes

A mirror without lights can be cut to your own size in the cut to size configurator – rectangles up to 200 × 200 cm and circles from 13 to 150 cm across, with dimensions set to the millimetre. There is also an irregular option, where you upload your own outline.
