Why an arch

The arch is one of the oldest shapes in architecture and one of the newest in interiors. It softens a room without going all the way to a circle, and because the bottom edge is straight it still sits properly above a console table, a basin or a chest of drawers. That combination – curve on top, straight line at the bottom – is why arched mirrors have taken over from plain rectangles in so many hallways.

Full-length arches

The tall version is the one most people are looking for: an arch 140–170 cm high, hung rather than leant. In theory a mirror half your own height is enough to see yourself head to toe, but in practice we recommend a mirror 140–170 cm tall: the bottom edge 30–40 cm off the floor, which puts the top edge roughly level with the top of the head of the tallest person in the house. A wall-mounted mirror does the same job as a leaner without taking up floor space, and it cannot be knocked over – we do not make freestanding, floor or cheval mirrors.

Half-moon and semi-circle shapes

Flatten the arch and you get a half-moon: a straight bottom edge with a semicircular top. It suits a low wall above a console table or a headboard, where a full arch would run into a ceiling or a picture rail.

Frameless, on purpose

Most arched mirrors on the market are sold as a gold or wooden frame with a mirror inside it. Ours are the opposite: the glass itself is cut to the arch, with a polished edge and no frame at all – see mirrors without lights. The shape is the whole design, which is why it sits equally well in a period hallway and a plain modern bathroom.

Arched mirrors in the bathroom

Above a basin the arch breaks up the straight lines of tiling while the flat bottom edge follows the vanity unit. Keep the width to 70–90% of the unit below, and see bathroom mirrors for the rest of the range. The lit versions are listed with the irregular LED mirrors, where the backlight traces the arch onto the wall.
